A group of children at the end of the world learn a life lesson. A fantasy tale.

The wind nipped at their backs, sending icy spiders of cold beneath the hems of their pants. Their skin was red and chapped where tattered shirts met waists, but their shawls and blankets and the bonfire they all gathered round kept the worst of it at bay.

There were six of them sat on pieces of driftwood and half-buried barrels bleached white by the sun’s unrelenting light. It was not the smallest number the woman had ever seen, but things were different then. A smaller number had been expected. Okay.
